Blood Clotting

Clotting refers to a blood clot development and the tendency for some patients to develop blood clots. If your blood circulation slows ? there is a greater chance for your blood to form a clot. A common area for clot development is in the lower legs ? this is called a deep vein thrombosis or DVT. The heart is another area where a blood clot may form. Clotting is a serious medical condition that can cut off or restrict blood flow and requires professional care and management.

To slow or prevent your clotting risk the medication warfarin (Coumadin®) may be prescribed to slow the body's ability to make a clot. Warfarin is the generic version of the brand name drug Coumadin®. Coumadin® is commonly referred to as a blood thinner. Products such as Coumadin® or warfarin require blood tests that measure clotting time. Home INR testing has made it easy for patients to test their blood. Home testing is reimbursed by Medicare and most private insurance companies
