2. FROM THE FDA
--------------------
"New Diabetes Management System approved for use" The
FreeStyle Tracker by TheraSense, Inc. uses new technology
for diabetes management by combining a glucose meter with
a hand-held computer referred to as a personal digital
assistant (PDA). Together, these create a glucose meter
that also tracks and helps manage blood sugar levels.
PDA's are small, hand-held electronic organizers based
on computer technology. Users are able to store and retrieve
phone numbers, appointments and notes as well as exchange
information with personal computers.
To use the new system, the patient inserts a test strip
into the glucose module, pierces the skin with a lancet
and places a drop of blood on the strip. In addition to
showing current blood sugar levels, the system stores
readings in an electronic database. This database can
also include insulin usage, food intake, exercise and
medicine. This data can be graphed and displayed on the
PDA, or they can be uploaded to a personal computer.
The FreeStyle Tracker is used by people with diabetes
to measure glucose levels and track changes over time.
It can be used by anyone who performs self-monitoring
on blood glucose and does not require a doctors prescription.

3. Anti-coagulant News
---------------------------
"Cancer patients on anticoagulant therapy at risk"
Venous thrombosis patients on anticoagulant therapy, diagnosed
with cancer, are more likely to experience both recurrent
thromboembolic events and bleeding complications than
those without cancer, as reported by European researchers.
The Academic Medical Center of Amsterdam notes that there
is some evidence that greater bleeding is seen in cancer
patients but is not consistently found in all patients.
To investigate the risks of recurrent thromboembolism
and bleeding during anticoagulant therapy, the researchers
conducted a prospective follow-up study of 842 patients
with deep venous thrombosis. Of these, 181 were known
to have cancer at study entry.
At 12 months, the cumulative incidence of recurrent thromboembolism
was 20.7% in cancer patients and 6.8% in those without
cancer. Corresponding figures for major bleeding were
12.4% versus 4.9%.
Researchers conclude that because there are few avenues
for successful modification of current anticoagulant techniques
in these patients "new treatment strategies should be
developed".

levels.
We will also provide an educational guide which includes
lifestyle, dietary and supplement recommendations. This
guide was developed and written by Dr. Michael T. Murray,
