May is National Stroke Awareness Month and National High Blood Pressure Month
About 700,000 Americans will have a stroke this year--that's someone every 45 seconds.
Stroke is our nation's No. 3 killer and a leading cause of severe, long-term disability.---2005 Update,
American Heart Association
Nearly 1 in 3 adults has high blood pressure. About 28% of American adults age 18 and older or
about 59 million people, have "prehypertension." Of those with High Blood Pressure, 30% don't
know they have it; 34% are on medication and have it controlled; 25% are on medication but don't
have their high blood pressure under control; and 11% aren't on any medication.---2005 Update, American Heart Association
About half of people who have a first heart attack and two thirds who have a stroke have blood
pressure higher than 160/95 the risk for stroke is about 4 times greater than for those with
normal blood pressure. ---2005 Update, American Heart Association
Don't gamble with these odds. Take control of your health. There are easy things you can do to avoid
being a statistic. Monitoring your blood pressure on a regular basis at home allows you to be
proactive with your health and may alert you to serious risks sooner that may have gone unnoticed.
